Arche of Triumph
At the Piata Arcul de Triumf, on the Kiseleff Road in the northern part of Bucharest you will find a triumphal arch very similar to that one in Paris. When Romania gained its independence the first arch was built in 1878 completely out of wood. Then, in 1922 after World War I the arch was replaced by a new stone construction to commemorate Romania’s Great War dead. In 1935 the arch has been demolished and it took the architect Petre Antonescu a whole year to remodel it again.
The current arch is 27 meters high and contains a staircase so that visitors can climb up to the terrace on the top of the monument. The facades and the sculptures of the Arcul de Triumf were created by leading Romanian artists such as Ion Jalea, Constantin Medrea, Dimitrie Paciurea and Constantin Baraschi.
